Sal Khan and his team at Khan Academy have a class — or roughly 3,000 classes — you might want to take.

Okay, maybe you don’t want to take all of those classes, which could take years to get through (and not all of us need or want to prep for the GMAT). But Khan Academy’s YouTube video class database, which launched on the iPad on Sunday, gives any individual with a computer and sufficient Internet connection the opportunity to receive instruction on a variety of subjects, assuming they find the format and content of the classes palatable. read more

New, Free Continuing Education for Nurses: Preventing Colorectal Cancer

March 7, 2012
By

In honor of National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, the Nurse Oncology Education Program (NOEP) has launched a free course entitled Every Nurse Makes a Difference: Preventing Colorectal Cancer at http://www.noep.org. Nurses, no matter the field of practice, can impact colorectal cancer through education, support, and advocacy.

Austin, TX (PRWEB) March 05, 2012

Colorectal cancer is the third most prevalent cancer, and an estimated 143,460 cases are expected to occur this year in the U.S. (American Cancer Society, 2012). Despite these numbers, colorectal cancer is one of the most detectable, and if found early, most treatable forms of cancer.

Many people delay colorectal cancer screening because of the potential for embarrassment and/or fear of discomfort associated with examinations. Other barriers to timely screening are lack of knowledge about screening tests among patients and lack of healthcare professional recommendation.

Nurses can affect the public’s awareness and willingness to use screening measures that can detect colorectal cancers early, increasing the opportunity for cure and survival. “Every Nurse Makes a Difference: Preventing Colorectal Cancer” is a new online course providing nurses with 1.0 contact hours of accredited CE at http://www.noep.org. The project is made possible by the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT).

ABOUT NOEP – NOEP is a nonprofit project of the Texas Nurses Association/Foundation providing continuing education to nurses on cancer prevention, detection, treatment and survivorship.

M.I.T. Expands Free Online Courses, Offering Certificates

March 6, 2012
By

The biggest criticism of OpenCourseWare school options have been that the classes, while possibly effective, also offer no “on paper” credentials for students. Set to launch in spring, with a few classes each semester, M.I.T.x will offer a much more full-scope system of taking M.I.T. classes for free. Online students will be able to watch lectures, participate in discussions and generally be a part of the classes. After completing mastery of a particular subject area, M.I.T.x will offer an affordable certificate of mastery. The exact cost of the certificate has not been determined, but the money will go back into the M.I.T.x nonprofit to help expand the program.

Since it launched OpenCourseWare (OCW) 10 years ago, MIT has been committed to using technology to improve and greatly widen access to education. The launch of MITx represents a next step forward in that effort.

Antioch College extends full-tuition scholarships to all four founding classes

YELLOW SPRINGS, Ohio – January 17, 2012 – The Antioch College Board of Trustees today announced the extension of the Horace Mann Fellowships to all students admitted for the next three years. The announcement comes after an extensive review of the College’s endowment and Annual Fund, which both saw major increases in the last six months, President Mark Roosevelt said.

“We don’t want economics to be an impediment to a high-quality liberal arts education,” Roosevelt said. “By providing four year, full-tuition scholarships, we make attending Antioch College a realistic option for the best and brightest students, regardless of their family’s economic situation.”

There have been major increases in both the College’s endowment and Annual Fund, explained Steve Sturman, vice president for advancement. The endowment, now at $51.7 million, grew more than 106.7 percent, in large part due to a $35 million payout from the sale of YSI Inc. of which the College was a major shareholder. Read More
