Antioch College extends full-tuition scholarships to all four founding classes

YELLOW SPRINGS, Ohio – January 17, 2012 – The Antioch College Board of Trustees today announced the extension of the Horace Mann Fellowships to all students admitted for the next three years. The announcement comes after an extensive review of the College’s endowment and Annual Fund, which both saw major increases in the last six months, President Mark Roosevelt said.

“We don’t want economics to be an impediment to a high-quality liberal arts education,” Roosevelt said. “By providing four year, full-tuition scholarships, we make attending Antioch College a realistic option for the best and brightest students, regardless of their family’s economic situation.”

There have been major increases in both the College’s endowment and Annual Fund, explained Steve Sturman, vice president for advancement. The endowment, now at $51.7 million, grew more than 106.7 percent, in large part due to a $35 million payout from the sale of YSI Inc. of which the College was a major shareholder. Read More

Why Education ?

January 24, 2012
By

Education in its broadest, general sense is the means through which the aims and habits of a group of people lives on from one generation to the next. Generally, it occurs through any experience that has a formative effect on the way one thinks, feels, or acts. In its narrow, technical sense, education is the formal process by which society deliberately transmits its accumulated knowledge, skills, customs and values from one generation to another, e.g., instruction in schools.

A right to education has been created and recognized by some jurisdictions: Since 1952, Article 2 of the first Protocol to the European Convention on Human Rights obliges all signatory parties to guarantee the right to education. At the global level, the United Nations’ International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights of 1966 guarantees this right under its Article 13.

Why All Public Higher Education Should Be Free

Bob Samuels is President of the University Council

In his book The Price of Civilization, Jeffrey Sachs argues that the cost of making all public higher education free in America would be between fifteen and thirty billion dollars. While this may sound like a large sum, it could actually save money. First of all, the government is currently spending billions of dollars on for-profit schools and other colleges and universities that have very low graduation rates. In fact, what is going on in the state of California is that as students get priced out of the University of California, they either drop out or go to community colleges. Meanwhile as community colleges are defunded, they are forced to cut their enrollments and raise their fees, and the result is that students end up going to high-cost for-profit schools that have a very low graduate rate.
